What does the FedEx integration automate?

Here is what you can do with FedEx. Where an item is off, that step runs by hand or from the FedEx panel.

Creating a shipment
A shipment is created straight from the order and the tracking number is written back.
Cancelling a shipment
You can cancel a created shipment from the panel.
Automatic tracking
The carrier is polled regularly and the order status advances on its own.
Status mapping
Status codes are not calibrated yet: tracking is polled and the raw response is stored, but the order status is not advanced automatically. We would rather leave this open than write a mapping we cannot prove.

What you should know about the FedEx integration

The default service type is international priority

If the service type field is left empty in a FedEx connection, the international priority service is used. That is the right default for sellers shipping abroad quickly; but if you work domestically or with an economy service, every shipment is created at a more expensive service level than you expected. Setting the service type explicitly prevents the invoice surprise later.

You obtain your application keys through the project you create in the FedEx developer portal. The test environment has a separate address and separate credentials; test keys cannot connect to production.

Label format and tracking scope

On the FedEx connection, creating shipments, cancelling and querying tracking all work. Labels are produced as PDF by default; if your printer expects a different format, that setting can be changed in the connection details.

Label format looks like a detail but it matters in the warehouse: in an operation running thermal printers, rescaling a PDF label every time is wasted effort. Setting the format correctly upfront saves minutes of daily work.

On tracking, FedEx's status codes are not yet mapped to order statuses; the query runs, the response is stored, and the order is not advanced automatically.
